Social dance and dancing party represent a cultural phenomenon derived from the Renaissance and the liberation of human nature. Social dance combines art, social communication, exercise and culture, and its influence has been deeply rooted in people’s hearts. Likewise, dancing parties have been popular all over the world for hundreds of years. As a world intangible cultural heritage, the Vienna Opera Ball in Austria has been passed down for centuries.
In spite of its late start, China’s dancing party developed rapidly. From foreign settlement in old Shanghai to Yan'an revolutionary base area during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, and to Zhongnanhai, the site of some central institutions, dancing party could be seen everywhere. Such a social language integrated with art and exercise can transcend ideology, war and politics. Although impeded by the cultural revolution, dancing party has flourished again throughout China since the 1980s. At that time, some people described the prosperity of dancing as "nine out of ten Chinese people are gambling, and the left one tenth are indulging in dancing". Therefore, we can learn that Chinese people’s attitude towards dancing is a sentiment of intertwined love and hate.
